Honorable Father and Mother
Perhaps no scripture gets as much of a reaction from an understanding child as 'honor your father and mother.' We think these words were written as reminders to the young. Those who need to be formed into a good way of life. But perhaps these words were not so much written for the children as for the parents.
Our children look to us and follow our example. We are their first teachers. We expect them to honor us by listening to our words, obeying our requests, and following after our example. But that means we need to be conscious of the words we use, aware of the spirit of our requests, and especially sensitive to the example we set.
We expect our children to honor us. God commands it. But it is critical that we present them with something honorable.
