How to Turn a Bad Situation into a Positive One

We know, though, that God can turn bad situations into beautiful stories that turn out, ultimately, for good. Genesis 50:20 says, “Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good…” This verse is composed of the words of Joseph, spoken to his brothers who had, many years earlier sold him in to slavery. A really awful situation, right? But Joseph didn’t wallow in misery. He didn’t just wait for God to rescue him before he started being a living witness to the people around him.

Joseph allowed his faith to shape his response to his bad situation.

Let’s take our cue from Joseph, and do the same.

As a parent, how can you help your kids cope with fear and worry?

Here are some things that we could do and how it could bring a positive implication in our lives.

Family Prayer Time

Everyone is so busy in the morning trying to get to work or school so this may be a great opportunity where your family actually has time to pray with one another. It’s also a great way to remind the whole family to be thinking of others. Each day is a gift from the Lord, no matter what is going on in the world, so let us remain grateful and let us exemplify it for those around us.

If you can, plan your work around your day instead of your day around your work. Doing simple things you normally don’t have time for can will reveal how stressed-out and off-balance your life is.

Prioritize doing things you love and begin enjoying a slower life. (Psalm 15)

Increased Family Time

Eat your meals together. Watch movies. Play board games. Take advantage of everyone having the same schedule. This may take some adjustment and grace.

Get creative with your backyard or make a new play-space in your house so your family time can be one of enjoyment. (Ephesians 5:19-21)

Family Bible Study or Devotionals

Perhaps the greatest thing we can do during this time, with most churches not meeting, is to have a family devotional time. Reading a Bible passage, praying for one another, or listening to a sermon together and discussing it will bring your family closer than ever.

Taking this time away from usual busy schedules can allow for a readjustment of focus where it belongs - to God. At such tense times, it is imperative to encourage prayer for our country, for those who are sick, for those who are caring for the sick, and for each other.

Encourage authentic and honest discussion to bring forth a new level of heart intimacy your family is yet to know. When we find ourselves worrying we need to dig into God's Word further because at it's core the Word of God is Truth, Hope, and Life. We can find such comfort in reading God's words to us.

Family worship time and couple's devotional time is never a waste and can only edify us and bring encouragement to our weary hearts.

Personal Growth

During this time, you can choose to focus on some personal growth areas. Read, study, set up counseling. Taking care of our spiritual and emotional selves often takes a back burner to more demanding tasks.

Over the next few weeks, you might have a little extra time in your schedule to work on yourself. Take advantage of the opportunity. If you’re growing and changing emotionally and spiritually, everything around you will improve.

A positive outlook also reduces obsession over the crises at hand. (2 Timothy 2:15, 1 Corinthians 15:30-34)

Redefined Relationships

Instead of using technology as a social escape, divide your technology time between work and intentional social connection. This reminds us how much we need meaningful, physical connection to the people we know and love.

Use your time to speak face-to-face in person, rather than engaging in endless hours of surfing social media. Practice intentional interactions for the sole purpose of love and friendliness, and focus on real conversation. (Galatians 5:22-26)

The next few weeks do not need to be spent in anxious fear. It is important to be mindful of the times, to prepare for them and uphold wisdom, but we must not stop living.

Living abundantly can still be achieved with memorable activities and connection with your family.
